Asutamuland Tokushima

あすたむらんど徳島

A big park in Tokushima with a children's science museum, a planetarium and about 30 kinds of play equipment. Entry and parking are free: ideal with kids.

A prefectural park where play meets learning

Asutamuland Tokushima is a prefectural facility of about 24 hectares in Itano town, Tokushima Prefecture. It opened on 1 July 2001. Its motto is "PLAY AND LEARN" (in Japanese, roughly "enjoy learning"), and the idea is to spark children's curiosity about science while they play outdoors.

Entry to the park and parking are both free; only a few facilities, such as the children's science museum and the planetarium, charge a fee.

The children's science museum and planetarium

The heart of the park is the Children's Science Museum. Its hands-on exhibits are grouped under three themes: "Space and the Earth", "Life and the Environment" and "Science, Technology and People". There is also a planetarium where you can sit back under a starry sky.

In October 2021 the Tokushima Wooden Toy Museum, where children can play with wooden toys, opened inside the park. There is also a craft workshop where you can try making things yourself.

Running wild in the "Land of Adventure"

The outdoor Land of Adventure has about 30 kinds of play equipment, including a huge climbing complex called Wanpaku Toride (roughly "Rascal's Fort") and Water Paradise, where kids can splash about. The park is large and has several other zones too, such as the Land of Exploration and the Windmill Hill.

Yoshinogawa Meguri, a small boat ride past 206 raccoon dog (tanuki) figures, is suspended for the time being after an inspection found a fault in its equipment.

Getting there

By car it is about 5 minutes from Itano IC on the Takamatsu Expressway and Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway, or about 15 minutes from Aizumi IC on the Tokushima Expressway. There are also local buses from JR Tokushima Station that stop at Asutamuland.

The park is closed every Wednesday (or the following day when Wednesday is a public holiday; it stays open from 12 to 15 August). Opening hours are sometimes extended depending on the season, so check the official website.

Tips

  • The paid facilities only take cash and sightseeing vouchers, not credit cards or e-money, so bring some cash.
  • The park is closed on Wednesdays, so watch the day of the week when you fit it into a Tokushima itinerary.
  • If the kids will be in the water play area, bring a change of clothes and a towel.
