The world's architecture at 1/25 scale
Tobu World Square is a theme park in Kinugawa Onsen, a hot spring resort in Nikko city, Tochigi Prefecture, where miniature buildings are displayed outdoors. It opened in April 1993 and is run by a company in the Tobu Railway group.
On display are 102 ruins and buildings from around the world, all made in fine detail at 1/25 of their real size, many of them World Heritage sites. About 140,000 tiny figures are placed around the park, recreating even the streets and people around the buildings.
A round-the-world trip through six zones
The park is divided into six zones: Modern Japan, America, Egypt, Europe, Asia and Japan. You can see buildings from different countries and eras all in one go, including Tokyo Skytree, the Statue of Liberty, the Pyramid of Khufu, St Peter's Basilica, the Taj Mahal and Kasuga Taisha shrine.
The miniature Tokyo Skytree was completed in 2010, appearing two years before the real one was finished. Even the trees in the park are bonsai, chosen to match the scale of the buildings.
140,000 figures and free guided tours
Part of the fun here is looking not just at the buildings but at the little figures around them. Look closely and you will spot figures that resemble famous people, plus hidden characters that are easy to miss.
On free guided tours led by staff, you hear about the history of the buildings and stories behind them, as well as the "daily lives" of the figures. At some points you see figures playing music or marching, or boats set moving. Tours are divided by zone and take about 30 to 40 minutes.
Getting there
From Asakusa Station on the Tobu Railway it is about two hours by limited express, and the nearest station is Tobu World Square Station on the Tobu Kinugawa Line, which opened in July 2017. From Kinugawa Onsen Station it is about five minutes by bus.
By car, from the Imaichi IC (interchange) on the Nikko-Utsunomiya Road, take Route 121 towards Kinugawa Onsen; it takes about 20 minutes. Check the official website for opening hours and prices.
Tips
- The park is outdoors, so bring an umbrella or rain gear on wet days, and wear comfortable shoes.
- Guided tour times are set by zone and day of the week. If you want to join one, check the times first thing after you enter.
- Dogs are welcome, and there is a covered facility for dogs inside the park.
- It is close to the Kinugawa Onsen hot spring town, so it is easy to combine with a night at a hot spring inn.
