Kaikyo Yume Tower

オーヴィジョン海峡ゆめタワー(一般財団法人山口県国際総合センター)

A 153-metre tower near Shimonoseki Station. Its glass globe gives 360-degree views of the Kanmon Strait, between Honshu and Kyushu, and Ganryujima.

A lighthouse-inspired tower on the Kanmon Strait

Kaikyo Yume Tower is a 153-metre tower in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, completed in July 1996. Fitting for Shimonoseki, a port town on the Kanmon Strait (the narrow strait between Honshu and Kyushu), its design is inspired by a lighthouse, and at the very top sits a spherical observation room glazed all round.

It is run by the Yamaguchi Prefecture International General Centre, a general incorporated foundation. The facility's official name includes the name "O-Vision".

What you can see from the observation room

A glass-sided lift takes you up to the observation room in about 70 seconds. The observation room spans three levels, from the 28th to the 30th floor, and its highest point is 143 metres above the ground.

On a clear day you can see the Kanmon Strait; Ganryujima, the island known as the scene of the famous duel between the swordsmen Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro; the mountains of Kyushu; and all the way to the Hibikinada Sea and the Seto Inland Sea. The observation room also has panels on the strait's history, such as the Battle of Dan-no-ura, fought between the Genji and Heike clans.

At night the tower itself glows with lighting that changes colour by day of the week, and from the observation room you can enjoy the night view of the strait.

The matchmaking shrine on the 28th floor

On the 28th floor (136 metres above the ground) is an Enmusubi Shrine. Enmusubi means tying good bonds between people, especially romantic ones. In October 2006, Kaikyo Yume Tower became the first place in Yamaguchi Prefecture to be certified as a "Lovers' Sanctuary" (one of the tourist spots around Japan selected as good places to propose).

At the shrine you can buy charms, ema (wooden plaques on which you write a wish and offer it) and love fortunes. Its roof is decorated with a heart shape, making it a popular photo spot.

Getting there

It is about 7 minutes' walk from JR Shimonoseki Station. By bus, get off at "Buzenda", 1 minute from Shimonoseki Station, and walk 5 minutes. By car it is about 15 minutes from the Shimonoseki interchange, and you can use the tower's car park (entering the tower gets you a voucher for 2 hours of parking).

The only regular closing day is the 4th Saturday of January, but the tower may close temporarily in strong winds. Check the official website for opening hours and prices.

Tips

  • Go up in the late afternoon to enjoy the strait in daylight and the night view after sunset in one visit.
  • The tower may close temporarily on windy days, so if the weather looks rough, check the notices on the official website before you set off.
  • From the Enmusubi Shrine on the 28th floor you can also see the Kanmon Bridge and, across the strait, the Mojiko Retro district.
