Akiyoshidai Karst Observatory

A viewpoint over Akiyoshidai, a vast karst plateau of white limestone in green grassland. The building is under renovation until March 2027.

A karst plateau of white rocks in grassland

Akiyoshidai, in Mine, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is one of Japan's largest karst plateaus. A karst plateau is an upland formed as limestone, which dissolves easily in rain and groundwater, is eroded over a very long time. Here that has created a unique landscape of white limestone rocks poking up all over grassland that stretches as far as the eye can see.

Akiyoshidai was designated a Quasi-National Park in 1955 and a national Special Natural Monument in 1964. As Mine-Akiyoshidai Geopark, it is also a UNESCO Global Geopark. Beneath it lie many limestone caves, including Akiyoshido Cave.

The view from the Karst Observatory

The Akiyoshidai Karst Observatory is a round, two-storey viewing building with a 360-degree view across the plateau. Right next to it is Karstar, the Mine-Akiyoshidai Geopark Center, which serves as the base for sightseeing.

However, the observatory building is closed from 7 July 2026 to 26 March 2027 for renovation of its facilities, exterior walls and interior. Temporary toilets are provided during the works. Before visiting the area, check the latest notices on the official website of the Mine City Tourism Association.

Akiyoshidai through the seasons

Every February (usually on the third Sunday), the grassland is burnt off in the yamayaki (controlled burning) to keep it as grassland. In summer the plateau is covered in green; in autumn the plumes of susuki (Japanese pampas grass) glow in the setting sun and gentians bloom. On winter mornings you may even see a sea of clouds.

There is a nature trail across the plateau that takes about an hour to walk. It is also a good place for walking and cycling.

Getting there

It is about 40 to 45 minutes by bus from JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station. Walking from the Akiyoshido bus stop takes about 30 minutes, but you can also go through Akiyoshido Cave and come out on top of the plateau via the Elevator Entrance.

By car it is about 10 minutes from the Akiyoshidai IC. The viewpoint itself is free to visit.

Tips

  • The observatory building is closed for works until 26 March 2027. Even if you only plan to walk around the area, check the notices on the official website before you go.
  • The February yamayaki is an important event that protects this grassland landscape. If you want to see it, check that year's date on the official website.
  • Combine it with Akiyoshido Cave to see the underground cave and the limestone landscape above ground in one trip.
