Shikisai no Oka

四季彩の丘

About 15 ha of flowers laid out in stripes over Biei's rolling hills. On a clear day the Tokachi mountain range rises behind, a true Hokkaido view.

The signature flower fields of Biei, the town of hills

Shikisai no Oka (roughly "hill of the four seasons' colours") is a tourist garden in the town of Biei, almost in the middle of Hokkaido, between Asahikawa and Furano. Biei is known for its hills, covered in fields of vegetables, grain and flowers that fit together like a patchwork quilt, and Shikisai no Oka is one of the town's best-known sights.

Flowers of different colours are planted in bands across about 15 hectares of hillside, so from a distance the slope looks like one huge striped blanket. According to Hokkaido's official tourism site, on a clear day you can see the Tokachi mountain range in the background.

Flowers through the seasons, and snow play in winter

The flower season runs from spring to autumn: tulips in spring, poppies in early summer, sunflowers in summer and salvia and others in autumn, so the colours of the hill change depending on when you visit. At the end of summer, cleome and cosmos also come into their best.

The grounds are big. You can ride the Norokko-go, a bus pulled by a tractor, on a loop of about 15 minutes, or rent a four-seater cart and explore at your own pace. There is also an alpaca farm, open all year, where you can feed the animals.

In winter (early December to late March) the hill turns into a snowfield, with snowmobiles, snow rafting (a rubber boat towed by a snowmobile) and sledging.

Getting there and before you go

The nearest station is Bibaushi on the JR Furano Line; the official site puts it at about a 25-minute walk. Bibaushi is an unstaffed station. From JR Biei Station it takes about 12 minutes by car. In summer you can also use the Biyu Bus, a sightseeing loop bus run by the Biei Tourism Association.

There is an admission fee only during the peak flower season from July to September; the rest of the year entry is free. Parking also becomes paid at certain times of year. Opening hours change from month to month and prices can be revised, so check the official site before you set off.

Tips

  • According to the official information, admission, parking and activities can be paid in cash only, so bring cash with you.
  • Walking into the flower beds to take photos is not allowed; shoot from the paths. Drones cannot be flown during opening hours either.
  • There are no coin lockers on site. Leave big bags at the station or your accommodation and you will get around much more easily.
