A farm park below the Kirishima mountains: meet cows and sheep, taste soft-serve from fresh milk. Free entry, about 10 minutes' drive from Kirishima Jingu.

A farm park at the foot of the Kirishima mountains

Takachiho Farm is a visitor farm in Miyakonojo, Miyazaki Prefecture, at the foot of the Kirishima mountain range. It keeps cows, horses, sheep and other animals, and you can look around and get close to them. Admission and parking are free.

Although its name includes "Takachiho", it is not in the town of Takachiho in northern Miyazaki Prefecture, home of Amano Iwato Shrine and Takachiho Gorge. Be careful not to mix them up when you search for directions.

Meeting animals and making things yourself

At the Animal Fureai Land you can see and touch the animals up close. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays there is also cow milking and horse riding for small children.

You can also try making your own ice cream, butter and sausages. A footbath fed by a natural hot spring makes a good place for a break, and there are seasonal flowers too: cherry blossom in spring, sunflowers in summer and cosmos in autumn.

Tastes you only get at a farm

The signature treat is soft-serve ice cream. The restaurants serve yakiniku (grilled meat), jingisukan (lamb grilled on a special pan), pizza, steak and more. The shop sells dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and cheese, along with the farm's own goods.

Getting there

The nearest station is Kirishima-Jingu Station on the JR Nippo Line, about 10 minutes away by taxi. You can also take a bus, but it involves a change and takes about 30 minutes. By car it is about 10 minutes from Kirishima Jingu Shrine, about 40 minutes from Kagoshima Airport, and about 70 minutes from Miyazaki Station or Miyazaki Airport. It is easy to combine with a visit to Kirishima Jingu.

Tips

  • Some activities, such as milking and horse riding, only run on certain days and at certain times. If there is one you have your heart set on, check the official website beforehand.
  • Pets are not allowed, except for assistance dogs.
  • Public transport involves several changes, so taking a taxi from Kirishima-Jingu Station makes things easier.
