Kinchakuda
巾着田
A pouch-shaped meadow in a river bend where about five million red spider lilies bloom each autumn, with rapeseed in spring and cosmos in autumn.
A "pouch" shaped by the river
Kinchakuda is a patch of flat land almost encircled by the Koma River, which loops sharply as it flows through Hidaka in Saitama Prefecture. The name comes from its outline, which looks like a kinchaku, a traditional cloth pouch closed with a drawstring ("da" means rice field). It measures about 500m across and covers about 22 hectares.
The local name Koma goes back to 716, when people who had come over from Goguryeo, a kingdom on the Korean Peninsula, set up Koma District here. Kinchakuda itself was originally farmed as rice paddies.
Five million spider lilies
Autumn is when Kinchakuda is at its busiest. According to Hidaka City, about five million manjushage bloom here. Manjushage is another name for higanbana, the red spider lily, a scarlet flower that opens around the autumn equinox week the Japanese call Ohigan. It is counted among the largest colonies in Japan. The whole ground turns red, right in among the trees, like a thick crimson carpet.
The Kinchakuda Manjushage Festival is held while the flowers are out, and during the flowering period there is an entry fee for the Manjushage Park area. In 2026 the plants sprouted and flowered about two weeks later than usual, and the bloom report on 30 September said the flowers were "starting to pass their best".
Spider lilies are not the only show: there are cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers in spring, hydrangeas in summer and cosmos in autumn.
Getting there
The nearest station is Koma on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line, about 15 minutes' walk away. From JR Komagawa Station or Hanno Station, take a Kokusai Kogyo bus to the Kinchakuda stop, about 3 minutes' walk from the site.
In spider lily season the roads and car parks around the area get very crowded, so Hidaka City asks visitors to come by public transport. You can check how the flowers are doing in the bloom reports on the official website.
Tips
- The best time to see the spider lilies shifts a lot from year to year. Check the bloom reports on the official website before you set off.
- Tripods and monopods are banned during the flowering season, so if you are taking photos, be ready to shoot handheld.
- Entry is sometimes free towards the end of the festival (in 2026 it is free from 1 October). Check Hidaka City's information along with how the flowers are looking.
