A lookout on 107 m Shiroyama in central Kagoshima over Sakurajima, Kinko Bay and the city, where the Satsuma Rebellion fought its last battle.
A little hill in the middle of the city
Shiroyama is a 107 m hill in the centre of Kagoshima city. From the observatory near the top you can look out over the city and across Kinko Bay to Sakurajima, the volcano rising on the far side. On days when the air is clear you may even see the Kirishima mountains and Mount Kaimon in Ibusuki.
In the evening Sakurajima stands out in silhouette, and after dark the lights of the city spread out in front of you. The observatory itself is not very big.
Where the Satsuma Rebellion ended
Shiroyama is where the last fierce battle of the Satsuma Rebellion (the Seinan War) was fought in 1877. The rebellion was Japan's last civil war, in which Saigo Takamori, a Kagoshima native, and shizoku (former samurai) fought against the Meiji government. It ended with the battle at Shiroyama on 24 September that year.
Around the hill are historic sites linked to the war, such as the Saigo Cave, where Saigo is said to have spent his last days, and the place where he died.
A nature trail through the forest
Shiroyama was designated a Historic Site and Natural Monument of Japan in 1931. More than 600 species of plants grow wild here, and you can walk through a forest of camphor trees and subtropical plants.
The Shiroyama Nature Trail, about 2 km long, runs through the hill, with two entrances: one beside Terukuni Shrine and one at Iwasakidani. A huge camphor tree said to be about 400 years old is one of the highlights.
Getting there
From Kagoshima-Chuo Station, take the Kagoshima City View, a loop bus that goes round the city's sights, and get off at the Shiroyama stop. The ride from Kagoshima-Chuo Station takes about 25 minutes.
If you drive, there is a car park near the observatory.
Tips
- The view feels very different by day and by night. Go in the late afternoon and you can enjoy Sakurajima at dusk and then the night view in one go.
- If you have the energy, it is well worth walking back down the nature trail towards Terukuni Shrine.
- Some days Sakurajima is hidden by cloud. Pick a clear day for a sharper view.
