Ryugado Cave
龍河洞
A limestone cave in Kochi, carved by rainwater over 175 million years. It holds traces of Yayoi-period life and the "Pot of the Gods", fused into the rock.
One of Japan's three great limestone caves
Ryugado is a shonyudo (a limestone cave formed as rainwater dissolves the rock) in Kami City, Kochi Prefecture. According to Kami City, it took shape over a very long time, about 175 million years. It is counted as one of Japan's three great limestone caves.
The cave is about 4km long in total, and about 1km of it is open to visitors as a walking route. Inside you pass stalactites (stones hanging from the ceiling), stone columns and other rock formations carved out by rainwater over a very long time.
Life in the Yayoi period and the "Pot of the Gods"
Ryugado preserves human history as well as natural formations. Dozens of pieces of pottery from the Yayoi period (roughly the few centuries either side of the start of the Common Era) have been found in the cave, along with the remains of hearths, charcoal and animal bones: traces of people who lived inside the cave at that time.
The most famous find is the Kami no Tsubo, the "Pot of the Gods": a Yayoi-period pot that has become fused with the stalactites over the ages, and which is now the symbol of Ryugado. In recognition of this value, Ryugado was designated both a national Natural Monument and a national Historic Site in 1934.
Types of tour route
As well as the sightseeing route, which you can enter without booking, there is an adventure route where you put on a helmet and rubber boots and go deeper into the cave. The adventure route must be booked in advance. There is also a route open only at certain times of year where you walk through a cave with flowing water (the Nishimoto cave). On the site there is also a museum with free entry, a rare bird centre where you can see long-tailed chickens called onagadori, and souvenir shops.
Getting there
It is about 20 minutes by bus or taxi from Tosa-Yamada Station on the JR Dosan Line. By car, it is about 25 minutes from the Nankoku interchange on the Kochi Expressway, or about 15 to 20 minutes from Kochi Ryoma Airport, and there is a free car park.
Tips
- The tour is underground, so you can visit even on days with a bit of rain.
- If you want to join the adventure route, book in advance following the instructions on the official website. Equipment is available to rent.
- The "Pot of the Gods" and the Yayoi-period pottery and stone tools were found near the cave exit. Keep your eyes open right to the end of the route.
