Nabana no Sato

なばなの里

A flower theme park in Nagashima, Kuwana, about 30 minutes from Nagoya, known for seasonal blooms, a vast greenhouse and huge autumn-to-spring illuminations.

A place for flowers all year round

Nabana no Sato is a flower theme park in Nagashima, Kuwana City, Mie Prefecture. It is part of Nagashima Resort, along with the Nagashima Spa Land amusement park and other attractions, and covers about 300,000 square metres.

In the Begonia Garden, a 9,000-square-metre onshitsu (greenhouse), colourful begonias and other flowers bloom whatever the season. In early summer, a hydrangea and iris festival is held in one of Japan's largest hydrangea and iris gardens.

There is also Island Fuji, an observation ride that lifts you 45m above the ground for 360-degree views, the Nagashima Beer Garden where you can try local craft beer, Sato no Yu, a hot spring for day visitors, plus restaurants and souvenir shops.

One of Japan's largest illuminations

Nabana no Sato is at its busiest during the illumination season from autumn to spring. The illumination began in 2004 and runs every year from around late October to around late May of the following year.

Highlights include a 200m tunnel of light, one of Japan's largest illuminations on water, and a large-scale light show in the main area whose theme changes every year. There are also light-ups of autumn leaves in autumn, and of Kawazu cherry blossoms and tulips in spring.

Mie Prefecture's tourism website says that a relaxed visit, including the Begonia Garden, takes about 2 to 2.5 hours.

Getting there

A direct bus from the Meitetsu Bus Center near Nagoya Station takes about 30 minutes to the Nabana no Sato stop, right by the entrance. During the illumination season, direct buses also run daily from Kintetsu-Nagashima Station on the Kintetsu line. On foot, it is about 25 minutes from Kintetsu-Nagashima Station or JR Nagashima Station.

Bus routes and services change with the seasons, so check the access information on the official website before you go. Opening hours and admission fees also vary by season.

Tips

  • The illumination switch-on time changes with the time of sunset. Arrive before dark, look round the flowers and greenhouse, then wait for the lights to come on.
  • Admission tickets during the illumination season include vouchers you can spend at the park's shops and restaurants.
  • Around Christmas (23 to 25 December) and at some other times, there may be special opening that requires tickets bought in advance. If you are going then, check the official website.
  • Roads get congested at weekends during the illumination season, and the official website asks visitors to use public transport where possible.
