A resort amusement park that began with a hot spring

Nagashima Spa Land is an amusement park on Nagashima in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture. Nagashima is land surrounded by three big rivers known as the Kiso Sansen (the three Kiso rivers). Hot-spring water was struck here in 1963, and that is how the resort began, about 60 years ago.

Around the amusement park are the natural hot spring Yuami no Shima, the flower and illumination garden Nabana no Sato, the outlet mall Jazz Dream Nagashima, the Nagoya Anpanman Children's Museum & Park, hotels and more. Together they are known as Nagashima Resort.

Twelve roller coasters

What sets Spa Land apart is its sheer number of roller coasters. According to Kuwana City there are 12 of them, one of the largest collections in Japan.

The star is Steel Dragon 2000, which opened in 2000, a Year of the Dragon. Its track runs for 2,479m, and according to the official website it is the longest coaster in Japan and the second longest in the world. Its highest point is 97m, its biggest drop 93.5m and its top speed 153km/h, and it also claims to be Japan's number one for height, drop and speed. Other coasters include Hakugei (White Whale), Japan's first hybrid coaster, and the flying coaster Acrobat.

There are also areas for small children, and in summer the park opens the Jumbo Seawater Pool, one of the largest seawater pools in Japan.

Getting there

It is about 20 minutes by bus from Kuwana Station. By car, it is about 30 minutes from Nagoya on the expressway.

Opening hours, ticket prices and which rides are running vary from day to day. Check the official website before you go.

Tips

  • To ride Steel Dragon 2000 you must be 10 or older and between 140 and 185cm tall. If you are bringing children, check the requirements in advance.
  • Steel Dragon 2000 stops during opening hours for an inspection of about 30 minutes, and depending on the result it may be suspended.
  • In winter, combine the park with the illuminations at neighbouring Nabana no Sato to enjoy the resort for a whole day.
