A 400m pedestrian suspension bridge at the western foot of Hakone. On a clear day you can see Mount Fuji and Suruga Bay at once from the bridge.

A great 400m suspension bridge

Mishima Skywalk is a 400m pedestrian-only suspension bridge in Hakone Seiroku (the western foothills of the Hakone mountains), in the city of Mishima, Shizuoka Prefecture. Its official name is the Hakone Seiroku Mishima Otsuribashi (Great Suspension Bridge), and it opened on 14 December 2015.

When it opened, it overtook the previous record holder, the Kokonoe "Yume" Otsuribashi in Oita Prefecture (390m), to become the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan. The bridge is 1.6m wide, so you can cross it in a wheelchair.

On a clear day you can see Mount Fuji, Japan's highest mountain, and Suruga Bay, Japan's deepest bay, from the bridge. The mountains of Izu are visible too. Whether you can see Mount Fuji depends on the weather that day.

Things to do across the bridge

On the far side of the bridge are Forest Adventure, an obstacle course in the woods, a long zip line (a ride where you hang from a wire and slide down), a dog run and more. There is a wide range of activities, including Segway, buggy and electric-assist bicycle tours, all charged separately.

At the foot of the bridge is a cluster of shops, restaurants and cafés, where you can also try dishes made with vegetables grown in Hakone Seiroku.

Getting there

It is about 20 minutes by bus from stop 5 at the south exit of JR Mishima Station. From the Tokyo area it is about 80 minutes by car using the expressways.

Ticket prices and opening hours can change, and on some days operations change depending on the weather, so check the official website.

Tips

  • If you want to see Mount Fuji, pick a clear day when the air is crisp. Checking the weather forecast before you go is a good idea.
  • It is well equipped for accessibility, with free wheelchair loans and toilets with multilingual signs.
