Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat

A 30-minute trip in a small boat along the emerald Yoshino River, past towering rock walls. The signature experience of Oboke, deep in Shikoku's mountains.
Oboke, a gorge carved by the Yoshino River
Oboke is a gorge on the middle reaches of the Yoshino River, which flows through Miyoshi City in Tokushima Prefecture. Over a very long time the river cut into the rock and created a deep V-shaped valley.
The rock of the gorge is mostly crystalline schist. Worn smooth by the water, the rock faces are often compared to a row of marble sculptures. In 2014 Oboke was designated a national Natural Monument for its geology, and a rare pebble-bearing schist found here (schist containing small stones) is a Natural Monument of Tokushima Prefecture.
A boat trip of about 30 minutes
The boat makes a round trip of about 4km through the heart of Oboke Gorge, taking about 30 minutes. Looking up at the cliffs from just above the water, with the rock stacked in layers, is far more dramatic than the view from the road.
No booking is needed; boats run as passengers arrive. You wear a life jacket on board. Trips are cancelled in strong winds or when the river is high, and when the water is low the boat may run a shorter course.
Enjoying the seasons
Cherry blossom lines the river in spring, and autumn leaves in autumn. Whatever the season, you can enjoy the contrast between the emerald-green water and the pale rock.
Above the boat landing is Oboke-kyo Mannaka, with a restaurant and a souvenir shop, where you can try local dishes.
Getting there
The nearest station is JR Oboke Station. From the station, take a local bus (Shikoku Kotsu); there is a bus stop in front of the boat landing. You can also walk. If you come by train, there is a pick-up and drop-off service to and from Oboke Station (check the official website for how to use it).

Tips
- After a spell of rain or a typhoon, trips may be cancelled because the river is high. On days when the weather is unsettled, check whether the boats are running before you set out.
- You can also reach the Iya Kazurabashi, a suspension bridge woven from vines, by local bus from Oboke Station. Try planning a trip that covers both.
- Pets are not allowed on board, except assistance dogs.
