Daisen Makiba Milk no Sato

大山まきばみるくの里

Tottori's beloved Shirobara Milk farm at the foot of Mount Daisen: rich soft-serve with views of grazing cows, Daisen and Yumigahama.

Home of Shirobara Milk, Tottori's "soul drink"

Daisen Makiba Milk no Sato is a visitor facility set in pastureland at the foot of Mount Daisen, in the town of Hoki in western Tottori Prefecture. It is run by the Daisen Dairy Agricultural Cooperative, a group of Tottori dairy farmers. The cooperative's Shirobara Milk is what people in Tottori grow up drinking as children, and it is so well loved that it is called the soul drink of Tottori.

The facility closed in September 2025 for its first major renovation in the 28 years since it opened, and reopened on 18 April 2026. New additions include a concept shop that brings the world of Shirobara Milk to life and a counter for DAISEN MILK, a new takeaway-only brand.

A farm looking out on Daisen and Yumigahama

Behind the facility rises Mount Daisen, one of the great peaks of the Chugoku region, and in the other direction you can see across the Yumigahama Peninsula. In the season when the grass is growing, you can watch the cows grazing in the pasture. Grazing is planned for roughly mid-April to early November, but the cows are not out every day.

There is also a meadow area called Pasture Garden, where you can eat takeaway food outdoors.

The famous soft-serve and dairy dishes

The star attraction is the special soft-serve ice cream made with Shirobara Milk. It has a rich, milky flavour and a smooth texture.

The restaurant serves dishes and desserts made with Daisen Dairy's milk and dairy products, as well as menus using beef from Tottori Prefecture. The shop sells Shirobara dairy products along with original goods featuring the milk carton design. On Fridays there are hands-on classes, by reservation, where you can hear from dairy farmers and make something simple from dairy products (mainly for groups).

Getting there and opening season

The farm is really a place to drive to. You can reach it from the Mizokuchi IC on the Yonago Expressway or the Yonago IC on the San'in Expressway. From JR Yonago Station or Yonago Airport it takes about 30 minutes by rental car or taxi. The facility does not recommend coming by public transport and instead suggests a car, a taxi or the seasonal sightseeing taxi.

Entry is free. It closes for the winter (December to early March) and is normally closed on Tuesdays. Closing days may change in busy periods, so check the opening days and hours on the official website.

Tips

  • On busy days, such as autumn holiday weekends, parking may be restricted and temporary car parks may be set up. Check the notices on the official website before you set off.
  • The restaurant does not take reservations. Just turn up and you will be seated in order as tables become free.
  • Pets are not allowed inside the facility or on the lawn areas.
  • The cow-milking experience that used to be offered is no longer available.
