A theme park in Gunma, konnyaku country

Konnyaku is a traditional Japanese food made from the konnyaku potato (konjac corm). It contains calcium and dietary fibre, and shirataki, the thin konnyaku noodles that go into sukiyaki, are one kind of it. Gunma Prefecture harvests more konnyaku potatoes than anywhere else in Japan, over 90% of the national total.

Konnyaku Park, in the town of Kanra in Gunma, is a theme park run by the konnyaku maker Yokoo Daily Foods. Entry is free, and through a factory tour and tastings you can have fun learning all about konnyaku.

Factory tour and free tasting buffet

From the viewing corridor you can see three production lines through the windows: slab konnyaku, shirataki and jelly. You can follow how the raw konnyaku potatoes become products and get packed into bags.

The big draw is the free tasting buffet. You can try about 15 konnyaku dishes, from classics to creative twists and desserts. Some dishes change with the seasons or from day to day.

Make your own, and footbaths too

In the paid, bookable hands-on sessions, you can make konnyaku yourself. There are three courses to choose from. There is also a tsumehodai ("stuff as much as you like") offer every day, where you fill a bag with as much as it will hold.

The park also has a café serving konnyaku soft-serve ice cream, four kinds of footbath, and rides such as a Ferris wheel, so it is fun for families too.

Getting there

Driving is easiest: it is about 10 minutes from the Tomioka interchange on the Joshin-etsu Expressway. It is also close to the World Heritage Tomioka Silk Mill. By train, the nearest station is Joshu-Fukushima, about 10 minutes away by car.

Tips

  • If you sign up for a hands-on session, you get priority entry to the tasting buffet.
  • If you want to do a hands-on session on a weekend or public holiday, it is best to book in advance.
  • Combine it with Tomioka Silk Mill and you can enjoy south-western Gunma in a single day.
