The 296 m tower that became the face of Minato Mirai

Yokohama Landmark Tower is a 296 m, 70-storey skyscraper in Minato Mirai 21, the redevelopment district along Yokohama's waterfront. It opened on 16 July 1993 as the first private-sector project of the Minato Mirai 21 scheme.

The basic design was by the American architect Hugh Stubbins and his firm. The building houses offices, the Landmark Plaza shopping centre with about 160 shops, a hotel and the Sky Garden observation floor, among other things.

Dockyard Garden, Japan's oldest stone dock for merchant ships

Dockyard Garden, at the foot of the building, is the former No. 2 Dock of the Yokohama Dock Company, completed in December 1896 (Meiji 29). A dock is a facility where a ship is brought in and the water drained out so it can be repaired or built. It was designed by the naval engineer Tsunekawa Ryusaku.

It is about 107 m long, about 29 m wide at the top and about 10 m deep, built from stones brought from Manazuru, Izu and elsewhere. It is the oldest surviving stone dock for merchant ships in Japan, and in December 1997 it was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It was preserved and restored as part of the construction of Landmark Tower and opened to the public in its current form when the tower opened in 1993.

Observation floor and hotel closed for renovation

Sky Garden, the observation floor on the 69th floor at a height of 273 m, has been temporarily closed since its last day of business on 31 December 2025 because of major renovation work on the building. According to the official website it is due to reopen in 2028 or later, and the exact timing will be announced once it is decided.

Visitors used to reach Sky Garden by a high-speed lift that climbs to the 69th floor in about 40 seconds at 750 m per minute (the official website describes it as "the fastest in Japan"). The Yokohama Royal Park Hotel on floors 52 to 67 has also been closed since 31 March 2025, and is due to reopen in fiscal year 2028 as a hotel under Marriott International's Luxury Collection brand.

Meanwhile, the Landmark Plaza shopping centre and the restaurants remain open.

Getting there

It is about a 3-minute walk from Minatomirai Station on the Minatomirai Line. From Sakuragicho Station (JR and Yokohama Municipal Subway) it takes about 5 minutes on foot using a covered moving walkway. Opening hours vary by shop, so check the official website.

Tips

  • As of September 2026, the Sky Garden observation floor is closed. If you go expecting to enjoy the view from Landmark Tower you will not be able to get in, so check the official website for news of its reopening.
  • Dockyard Garden is an open-air stone space at the foot of the building. While you are shopping, take a look at the stonework of this Meiji-era dock.
  • The moving walkway from Sakuragicho Station is covered, so you can get there on a rainy day without getting very wet.
