Shiraito Falls (Karuizawa)
白糸の滝
In Karuizawa's woods, hundreds of fine streams pour like white threads from a curved rock wall. Low, but the wide curtain of water is stunning.

Shiraito Falls is a waterfall in Nagakura, in the north of Karuizawa Town, Nagano Prefecture. It is only about 3 m high but about 70 m wide. Groundwater pours out in hundreds of streams from all over a gently curving rock wall, looking, just as the name says, like a curtain of white threads (shiraito means "white thread").
The water starts as rain falling on nearby Mount Asama. It soaks into the ground and flows underground for a long time before springing out of the rock wall here. Because it is spring water, it is little affected by weather or season, and clear water flows all year round. The falls are the source of the Yukawa River.
Something for every season
The falls are surrounded by forest, and from spring into summer the fresh leaves and green moss are lovely. The autumn leaves are especially fine, and Karuizawa Town itself recommends it as an autumn-leaf spot. In winter the falls sit in a snowy landscape.
At some times of year the falls are lit up at night. Dates differ from year to year, so check in advance.
Getting there
From the north exit of Karuizawa Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, take a bus towards Kusatsu Onsen and get off at the Shiraito-no-Taki stop, about 25 minutes. The bus passes through Kyu-Karuizawa and runs along the Shiraito Highland Way toll road. From the bus stop it is about a 5-minute walk to the falls.
By car you also use the Shiraito Highland Way (toll road). There is a car park and toilets near the falls. Viewing the falls is free and there are no time restrictions.
Tips
- The falls are on the bus route between Kusatsu Onsen and Karuizawa, so you can stop off on the way to or from Kusatsu (about an hour from Kusatsu Onsen).
- If you want a longer walk, a nature trail links Shiraito Falls with Ryugaeshi Falls. It is a relatively easy path.
- If you drive, the Shiraito Highland Way is a toll road. Check tolls and winter access on the road's official website before you go.
