Geibikei Gorge, Iwate | Japan is Nippon

Glide between towering limestone cliffs in a wooden boat steered by a boatman with a single pole, on a 90-minute trip as his songs echo off the rock.

Named after a rock shaped like a lion's nose

Geibikei Gorge is in Higashiyama-cho, Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture. Along the Satetsu River, a tributary of the Kitakami River, limestone cliffs more than 50m high line the water for about 2km. In 1925 (Taisho 14) it became the first place in Iwate Prefecture to be designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty.

Gei means shishi, a lion. The name comes from a knobbly rock jutting out upstream in the gorge that looks like a lion's nose.

Hand-poled boats and boatmen's songs

The way to enjoy Geibikei is, above all, on a boat trip. A sendo (boatman) steers the boat with a single pole and guides you through the gorge. The round trip takes about 90 minutes. The boats are handmade from Japanese cedar by skilled boatmen.

On the way, the boatman sings the folk song Geibi Oiwake. His powerful voice echoes off the cliffs, a sound you can only get in a gorge like this. Along the route, named rocks appear one after another, such as Fuji-iwa, draped in wisteria vines, and Ryoun-iwa, which looks like a face.

At the far end of the trip towers the gorge's symbol, Daigeibi-iwa. A famous tradition here is making a wish by throwing undama at the rock: small lucky balls, each for a different wish such as fate, long life, money luck or finding love.

Seasons and getting there

In late April a lone cherry tree is in bloom, and in mid-May wisteria flowers on the cliffs. Summer brings fresh greenery, and from mid-October to early November the autumn leaves. In winter you travel through the snowy scenery warmed by a kotatsu (a low heated table with a quilt over it) in a kotatsu-bune. The boats run every day of the year, but may be cancelled when the river rises after heavy rain.

Change at JR Ichinoseki Station to the JR Ofunato Line, and from Geibikei Station it is about a five-minute walk. By car, it is about 30 minutes from the Ichinoseki Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. Check prices and boat times on the official website.

Tips

Parts of the JR Ofunato Line are scheduled to be suspended for equipment inspections from 6 to 9 October and from 8 to 10 December 2026. The boat operator says it will run a free shuttle bus during these periods.

Boats may not run after rain or on days when heavy rain is forecast, so check the operating status on the official website or social media before you set out.
On the winter kotatsu boats, you can enjoy a hotpot meal on board if you book in advance.
