Genbikei Gorge

厳美渓

A 2km gorge of giant rocks carved by an emerald-green river, with a famous teahouse whose dumplings "fly" to you across the water on a rope.

A gorge sculpted by the river over ages

Genbikei Gorge is in Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture, and is designated both a national Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument. The Iwai River, flowing down from Mount Kurikoma, has worn away the rock to create about 2km of strangely shaped rocks, huge boulders, waterfalls and deep pools.

One of the highlights is the okketsu, or potholes. These round holes form when sand and pebbles are swirled round and round by the current, grinding away the rock little by little. They were once underwater, and appeared at the surface as the riverbed eroded further.

Date Masamune, lord of the Sendai domain that ruled this area in the Edo period, is said to have praised Matsushima and Genbi as the two finest sights in his lands.

The suspension bridge and the "flying dumplings"

A walking path runs along the gorge so you can enjoy the scenery as you stroll. Of the bridges that cross it, the only suspension bridge is Goranba-bashi. Upstream you see rough rapids and huge boulders, downstream calm, deep pools, a striking contrast. In spring, the Teizan-zakura cherry tree, said to have been planted by Date Masamune himself, comes into bloom.

Genbikei's signature treat is kakko dango (sweet rice dumplings) from Kakkoya, a shop founded in 1907 (Meiji 40). The shop is on the far bank. On this side, in an azumaya (a small open rest hut), you put your money in a basket hanging from a rope and strike a wooden board with a mallet, and the basket is hauled across to the shop. A little later it comes gliding back over the river carrying dumplings and tea. There are three kinds of dumpling: black sesame, sweet bean paste and soy sauce.

Getting there and the seasons

It is about 20 minutes by car from JR Ichinoseki Station and about 8 minutes by car from the Ichinoseki Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. Hiraizumi, home to the World Heritage sites of Chusonji and Motsuji temples, is also about 15 minutes away by car, so it is easy to visit both together. Nearby there is a municipal car park and the Michi-no-Eki Genbikei roadside station.

Its look changes with the seasons: cherry blossoms and snowmelt in spring, cool mountain streams in summer, autumn leaves in autumn, and in winter a scene like an ink-wash painting.

Tips

  • To order the flying dumplings, put the money for the number of people in the basket. Opening hours can change, so check before you go.
  • Goranba-bashi is a suspension bridge, so it sways as you walk. From the bridge, compare the views upstream and downstream.
  • Geibikei Gorge, a little further away, is a gorge you enjoy from a boat, a different experience from Genbikei, which you take in on foot.
